Philip Slagter, born in Norman, Oklahoma, is a self-taught painter and one of America’s first "Pop-Surrealists". His artistic journey began with his grandfather, a wildlife painter, who inspired his love for art. Despite initially majoring in commercial art at Indiana State University, Slagter's passion for painting led him to New York City, where he worked as a graphic designer and illustrator. Unsatisfied with the commercial art world, he moved to Northeastern Connecticut to pursue painting full-time, seeking truth and artistic fulfillment.

Slagter’s career spans decades and continents, with exhibitions in Thailand, Los Angeles, and beyond. His work has been collected by prominent figures like Eli Broad and Marcia Weisman as well as the Royal Family of Thailand. He has also contributed to large-scale projects, such as murals and intricate carvings for Las Vegas casinos, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft.

In 2010, Slagter faced a significant challenge when he lost his right eye to glaucoma. However, his resilience and determination allowed him to continue creating art without letting this obstacle hinder his vision. Following the tragic loss of one of his daughters in 2012, Slagter found a renewed sense of purpose in his work. Drawing strength from his surviving daughter, who lives on the island of Java in Indonesia, as well as from his extensive experiences and travels, he continues to infuse his art with deep meaning and inspiration.
