Created in 1994 while living in Thailand, Philip Slagter painted this joyful scene when his wife was pregnant with their daughter Dao. With no photograph to manifest their wish, the artist turned tradition into a canvas—painting a vibrant mother and child surrounded by golden flora, fauna, and folkloric animals.
